The Land of Loviștea

“Stop, traveler! Where nature commands you to halt, and eternal bravery also paused…” Stop in the Land of Loviștea!

The Land of Loviștea is a special place, a fortress surrounded by mountains, traversed by the ancient European trade route, the crusaders’ road, situated at the crossroads of Transylvania, Oltenia, and Muntenia.

The Land of Loviștea is crossed by the Olt and Lotru rivers, connecting with neighboring regions through the two ends of the Olt Gorge and the ancient road Calea Mare (The Great Road).

The Land of Loviștea is most likely the site where Basarab I, through his victory at Posada on November 9–12, 1330, signed the birth certificate of Wallachia, marking the emergence of the first medieval Romanian state.

The Land of Loviștea bears, at every step, traces of World War I, a Romanian Verdun, where the locals honor and remember those who fell in the war that led to the creation of Greater Romania.

The Land of Loviștea is the land of moșneni (freeholders), shepherds, knights, outlaws, and hidden Roman castra in the mountains. It is one of Romania’s richest and most original folkloric areas.

The Land of Loviștea is among the oldest historically documented regions—first mentioned in 1233—but people likely settled here even earlier, as evidenced by the still-visible Roman castra remains.

The Land of Loviștea is a place where the sun rises from one mountain and sets behind another, with a picturesque hill-valley landscape. From any point in this area, the surrounding mountain peaks are visible, enclosing the Land of Loviștea like the walls of a fortress.

We invite you to explore and discover the beauty and history of these places by traveling through the Land of Loviștea on Via Valahia!
