“St. Nicholas” Church, CÂINENII MICI – Historical Monument – 1733

The St. Nicholas Monument-Church is one of the few churches in Muntenia built and painted following the Moldavian style. The inscription in the church’s narthex indicates the year of its construction, 1733, through the care and expense of Lord Necolae Petru: “… on August 2, 1733, during the reign of Grigore Ghica Voivode, it was completed.”

The original interior painting, slightly retouched in places, dates back to 1758 and was signed by painters Hristea Ereu, Gherghe Ereu, and Magdalina Erita. The exterior painting, from 1846, was done by painters Ioniță and Pătru, whose signatures can be found on a column in the porch. The painting reflects the style of religious structures founded by local rulers and minor boyars.

On the southern façade, there is a large panel depicting the donors of the 1846 exterior painting: Neagoe Moțoc, his wife Sînziana, and their two sons. On the western façade of the porch, there is an icon of the church’s patron saint, St. Nicholas, framed by four mounted military saints.
