”Via Carolina” (Ganga)

Fragment from the Austrian road “Via Carolina” (Caineni Mari – Right Bank of the Olt River)

Between 1716 and 1718, the Austro-Turkish war took place, and starting at the end of 1716, Austrian troops were present in the Oltenia region. For strategic reasons, in 1717, the Austrians, under Emperor Charles VI, opened a road along the Olt Valley for military equipment and carriages. This marked the first time that the Olt Valley became a connection route between Oltenia and Transylvania; previously, only the old Loviştea route towards Curtea de Argeş existed.

The road was named after Emperor Charles VI, “Via Carolina,” and at the beginning of this road, two white marble plaques measuring 2.30 by 1.20 meters were placed, bearing the inscription: “Traveler, stop. Where nature commands you to halt, and Trajan’s bravery also paused. (…)”

The local name for this plaque is Ganga.

Location: In the village of Caineni Mari, on the rocks above the Sibiu–Râmnicu Vâlcea road, on the left side when heading towards Sibiu.
