Invârtita Lake

In the center of the Nucșoara commune, at an altitude of 814 meters, lies Lake Invârtita, the largest karst lake formed by the collapse over a gypsum deposit. The lake is fed by underground springs, some of which are sulfurous, while others are rich in calcium and sodium. The gypsum layer on which the lake was formed is covered by a 2-3 meter layer of mud.

Together with the hill on the opposite side of the specially arranged parking area, known as Magura, Lake Invârtita has been declared a protected area and a natural monument. We recommend following the pedestrian path that surrounds the lake and hiking up to the Magura Peak to admire both the lake and the Doamnei Valley from above.

A specific phenomenon occurs sometimes during autumn when, due to temperature differences between day and night, fish in the lake, in search of shelter, stir up the shore, releasing harmful sulfur vapors. The sulfur vapors disorient the fish, causing them to come to the water’s surface, appearing as if they were dead.

Lake Invârtita is not only a natural beauty worth exploring but also an area with unique ecological and geological characteristics that contribute to its significance as a protected site and a remarkable attraction for visitors.
